The idea for the shelter was derived from both the climate of the site and my childhood memory of an old Japanese animation called ‘Demantan Croaker’. The site of shelter is in Turramurra Memorial Park in Turramurra which has the highest average rainfall rate in the Sydney metropolitan area. The site condition was associated with the animation of my childhood memory.
The structure of the picnic shelter was inspired by the umbrella and the naked chair by Outofstock Design. The initial choice of material was made in order to preserve the shelter from vandalism. The rib structure system was borrowed directly from the umbrella to support the overall shelter loading. Another idea borrowed from the umbrella was tension in the structure. This was reinterpreted into a feature of the shelter with a faceted steel surface. The folded steel sheet in the naked chair gave me inspiration for the shelter structure. The ductility of steel contributes greatly to firm structure as well as the beauty of the faceted surface.
